What does a Health Coach do? Do you really need one? These are two questions that I usually get as a Health Coach.

First, some of the facts:

~ Millions of Americans are on some kind of diet.

~ 80% of premature heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes CAN be prevented with better nutrition and lifestyle habits. (according to the WHO).

~ 42% of 1st — 3rd grade girls want to be thinner and 81% of 10 year old girls are afraid of being fat (according to pbs.org Perfect Illusions)

~ The prevalence of diabetes (Type 2 and Type 1) is estimated to increase by 54% by 2030 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5278808/).

~ Another fact is that most people aren’t going to make a change all by themselves. If you could, you really would have by now right? What you need is the right system, the right support, and the right accountability.

With the demands of work and life, what we have been doing to try to change our health for the better or to manage stress or to work out a work/life balance is no longer working and many are looking for something different.

Did you know that 95% of our behavior happens out of habit, whether it’s unconsciously or in response to an external demand? This is the reason why we struggle to make changes. This is true even when the need for change becomes so obvious and our intentions are strong.

Here’s another statistic, Did you know that 95% of chronic illness MIGHT be prevented or even improved through dietary and lifestyle changes?

You can agree that there’s an obvious gap between WHAT you need to get and stay healthy and the HOW to get and stay healthy. That’s exactly where a Health Coach comes in; to provide the right system, support and accountability so you can finally make strides in reaching your health and wellness goals. I like to illustrate the whole doctor and health coach roles this way: a doctor is the WHAT — so, he/she give you the diagnoses, gives you a list of WHAT you should do and/or not do, eat or not eat. A Health Coach is the HOW — how you can apply/o what the doctor has told you within your daily life. Does this make sense?

So, what is a Health Coach?

As a Health Coach, I focus on overall lifestyle habit, wellness, and food choices by helping you find the right foods to support you in reaching your health goals and a better balance in all areas of your life. My clients are active participants in this entire process. A Health Coach is someone who helps you to identify small, manageable food and lifestyle changes that you can make in order to reach your health goals, whatever they are (weight-loss, stress reduction, gaining energy, etc).

Some of the things I DON’T Do as a Health Coach?

I don’t put anyone on a diet. Instead, I show you how to listen to your body and start identifying what food choices are healthy for you.

I also don’t prescribe medicine. As a Holistic Health Coach, I deal with symptoms as a whole, I deal with physical symptoms by addressing your food choices first as well as stress reduction, and physical movement.

Do I follow and prescribe any one diet to my clients?

While I personally follow a mainly plant-based diet, we are all different. Our bodies differ, our nutritional needs differ, we’re all at different stages of our lives, our tastes differ. One of my beliefs is that “What works for one person may not work for someone else.”

How do you know if you need a Health Coach?

Maybe you have cravings that you don’t know how to stop. I help you identify the cause of those cravings and how to deal with them.

Maybe you’ve gained some weight even though you are not eating any differently than you did in the past. As we age though, there may be some dietary changes that you need but you don’t know where to start.. I help you identify the easiest changes to make today that will make the biggest impact on your health.

Maybe you know your family needs to eat better but you’re not quite sure how to go about it.

Maybe you’re stressed out with all the daily family and work responsibilities. I show you the relationship between stress and chronic illness, how to re-set your priorities, and how to get your stress under control.

Maybe you don’t seem to have enough time for yourself never mind finding time to exercise or even to cook a healthy meal.

Where do I work with clients?

I work with clients across the country via phone or video chat.

If you’re still not sure if health coaching is right for you, I invite you to a complementary session.

I hope this helped you get some clarity on what a Health Coach does. You are not alone, you CAN make healthier changes for you and your family and a Health Coach can most certainly help you.
